OHOA Module: Routines for Participation and Learning

Inquiry Challenge

Time to complete: 15 minutes

For some people, as they begin to work with children who are born deaf-blind or are deaf-blind with additional disabilities, routines may not be recognized as opportunities for learning.

Pretend that you are a new administrator who has very little experience working with students with special needs. As you come into a classroom one day to observe an intervener working with a student, you are shocked to see that there is limited time spent doing typical academic types of activities. As you watch the video "Routines Have Value," take the perspective of the administrator who may be feeling concerned about how much instructional time is lost for the child in the video.

In your Intervener Journal, write down your concerns. At the end of the module, we will revisit this and see how your perspective has changed.
